Letter Approximate pronunciation
A ah as in father
B and V represent the same sound as in English but without the explosiveness
C there are two main pronunciations
C before e, i, s and in septum (centro)
C before a, o, u k as in cancer (capitán)
CH ch as in champ
D there are two main pronunciations
D between vowel th as in weather (medio)
D after n, l like d in dart (donde)
E eh as in element
F like the English f in for
G there are two main pronunciations
G before e, i harsher than h in hemoglobin
Gue, Gui hard g as in guest
H always silent as in hour
I ee as in seen
J more forcefully than in ham
K as in English
L as in English
LL y as in yes
M as in English
N as in English but with tip of tongue touching the back of the upper front teeth
Ñ ny as in canyon
O oh as in spoke
P slightly less explosive than the English p
Q always as k
R when beginning a word, roll the r more than in diarrhea
RR same as when beginning a word
S as in English
T as in English but with tip of tongue touching the back of the upper front teeth
U oo as in food
V see B
W as in English
X ks, gs as in oxygen, excellent
Y same as in y in yes
Y by itself or at the end of word like e in me
Z as s in soft
The definite article “the” in Spanish has two forms depending on the gender of the
noun. For feminine nouns the definite article is “la” and “el” for masculine nouns.
Throughout this dictionary, nouns will be identified with (f.) and (m.) respectively.
EXAMPLES:
the house casa (f.) = la casa
the tree arbol (m.) = el arbol
